VOIP Phone System & Service Provider

A VOIP phone system will soon be the virtual “wave of the future” in terms of how we communicate with each other. VOIP stands for “voice over internet protocol” and is effectively covered by all branches of internet voice communication. This is a type of technology allows you to make phone calls online using your internet connection as the main phone line.

Seeing Into the Future

Basically, the VOIP phone system will soon replace all of our traditional landlines because of the ease and convenience in which we are able to talk over the internet. The VOIP system converts the voice signal from your telephone’s receiver into a digital signal which travels over the internet. From there, that digital signal converts back into your voice signal and arrives at the other end, just like a regular phone conversation.

t1phonedude.jpg The VOIP phone system usually uses an adapter device that will convert your regular phone into a phone that can be used over the internet. Essentially, you then place a phone call using your regular phone but it is connected to the internet instead of being connected to a traditional phone line. The call then goes through your own local phone company or service provider, through the VOIP line, and ends up heading to the receiver’s line via the internet.

Getting the Right Gear

As with anything in the realm of technological advances, there is a variety of equipment needed to perform the basic service. The VOIP phone system is no different as you need to equip yourself with a high speed internet connection, a regular phone or microphone, and an adapter to convert the signal from normal phone line signal to a digital version of the same.

Calling It In

Most VOIP phone system services offer free calls to other users of the same phone service. Conversely, there is generally a fee to call other phone lines that are not active users of the same service. Some VOIP services only allow calls to users of the same VOIP service and will not even provide service for other calls to normal landline telephones. This can create some complications, especially if you have entirely converted your telephone service over to a VOIP system.

As with any new technological advance, put in the time to learn all of the facts about the product and the service before you invest your time and money. This is especially important when you are dealing with types of communication that can hinder your access to general services such as phone lines. The VOIP phone system can be advantageous to some but counter-productive to others.

Options for VoIP Phones

Any phone can be a VoIP phone with the correct adapter; the adapter will allow the telephone to transmit the voice over the internet.  These devices vary in price from about $120-$200 and often have multiple ports for more than one phone to be connected.  Usually with these systems only the base of the standard analog phone need be with the device and pc, otherwise a cordless phone for example will have the same range as always. VoIP phones have an Ethernet card in the base of the phone (for cordless) and transmits a signal through the broadband internet to make a phone call; this works much like a wireless networking adapter.  These phones specifically for use with VoIP can cost between $100 and $300 dollars on average, both corded and cordless varieties are available.

The cordless phones often have a lot of neat features similar to cell phones, you have the choice of ring tones, optional address book storage colored LCD screen, and many more features that could make this cordless VoIP phone a favorite.  Additionally many brands offer multiple hand sets for one stationary base, so a family can still have the convenience of having a phone in most every room with the economy of VoIP.

Using a Bluetooth Headset

There are also Bluetooth headsets specifically for use with VoIP phone technology; though some will also work with cell phones as well.  The Bluetooth headset allows hand free chatting while moving about the house or working at the pc; Bluetooth technology has terrific range and has plug and play capabilities.  The Bluetooth devices have an automatic stand-by mode and long battery life, up to ten hours of talk time.

For Businesses

There are entire lines of multi-line VoIP phones available for businesses; these phones each have their own Ethernet card for maximum coordination and functionality.  These VoIP phones work great with PBX services; they often have specific buttons for functions such as voice mail, built in speaker phone, programmable auto dials, and more.  These types of phones could really help to incorporate VoIP technology into a company.

Many VoIP phones for businesses have multiple capabilities to make working easier and faster, some of theses may include head set capabilities, built in client address books, lots of call functions, and a large screen for navigating the phones abundant features. You can do some research to see if this is the phone for you.

Finding the Perfect VoIP Service Provider

Finding the best VoIP service provider has raised many questions; which one should keep in mind when switching from your traditional phone to VoIP.

Here are a few questions to ponder and analyze before choosing your VoIP service provider:

  • What are the contracts terminations policy and costs? Can you get out of your contract early and if you can are there penalties attached? Long term contracts are a practice with all providers and sales personal. If you are aware of it you can at least make sure not to have extra fee in case you want/need to opt out earlier then the contract’s termination date.
  • What are the costs for installations and set up? Will you need an extra phone or any other equipment for installations and who will be paying for those?
  • Usually, sales personnel tell you what you want to hear; the low monthly fee, cheap phone calls, etc. and when everything is ready to go and your contract is signed you will learn of additional costs for servers.
  • How does a fax work with VoIP? Some VoIP service provider companies sometimes need additional faxing modules to use a fax service. Knowing that up front will save you a great deal of hassle in the long run.
  • What about emergency services – does the VoIP provider service you are about to install cover this service? Some VoIP service providers do not cover 911 emergency services and that can be a serious issue for some costumers.

VoIP is quickly replacing the existing traditional phone all over the U.S. It is an exceptional advanced technology that allows you to get phone access by using the broadband internet connection. This can seriously cut costs if you use your phone frequently and call distance or call overseas.

However there are downsides to the service, such as: being solely connected through your internet if your internet is down so is your phone service. We all know how frustrating it can be to drop a call in the middle of a conversation. Another concern for some is that certain providers do not have the emergency 911 service, this can be a major downside for some consumers.

To combat those issues we have our cell phones, most of us do anyway (I cannot think of one person who does not have a cell phone) and we can use those for such emergencies. The great savings are definitely worth it in the long run.

VoIP offers new and advanced technology, even if it is not the best option for you, you should do the research and be open to trying something new. It is the only way to find out if this technology will work out best for our own individual needs.
