Many people are changing the way they look at long distance telephone calls due to the invention of VOIP phone technology. VOIP translates into Voice Over Internet Protocol and enables the user to make telephone calls over the internet or to any other local area network which allows access. The method is effective and simple; the internet uses an adapter with a traditional telephone line and converts audio signals into digital signals to send through the line, translating back to audio signals once the receiver is reached.

A VOIP phone, therefore, is not a "special phone" by any means, but more accurately a special type of telephone technology that enables the user to use their regular phone to greater capability and functionality using the LAN or internet network line. VOIP technology basically converts a pre-existing internet connection into a viable and usable telephone line without interrupting or processing any other service. This creates a cost-free advantage to traditional telephone service.

Start the Revolution

VOIP technology is beginning to avalanche on the market, especially in businesses and corporations that are able to take advantage of the networking capabilities of their LAN or internet services. This technology, according to many industry experts, has the capability to completely transform the landscape of traditional telephone calls and entirely impact the way in which calls are made throughout the world. Many businesses are attempting to get in on the virtual "ground floor" of this technology by training staff members in VOIP training centers to assist in the overall integration of the VOIP phone.

Many service providers in the US and UK markets are already providing additional services adjacent to their traditional telephone services to users of the VOIP phone technology. Companies such as AT&T and Vonage are expanding their telephone enterprise to include LAN and internet services in order to join in the impending takeover of VOIP technology in terms of phone services.

Types of VOIP Technology

There are three basic types of VOIP phone technology in use on the market already. First, the ATA, which stands for analog telephone adapter, is probably the most basic way in which to partake in VOIP technology. This is a simple adapter that allows the connection of a standard telephone to the computer to connect, in turn, to the internet or LAN line that enables VOIP calling to take place.

The second piece of VOIP technology is the IP phones. These are computerized telephones that are identical to standard telephones with the exception of one feature: an Ethernet connection. These phones connect directly into a router without the use of an adapter and are automatically integrated into the VOIP phone technology.

The third piece of VOIP technology is computer-to-computer calling. This is a piece of software that enables, as the name suggests, computer-to-computer calling. There is no long distance and very little equipment is required. There is no charge other than the basic internet service provider fee, making computer-to-computer calling free.
