The VOIP Telephony Revolution
The basics of VOIP telephony starts with the usual process of transferring digital data-converted voice conversation over an Internet Protocol network, or a local area network. It is highly efficient, and the cost of transferring digital data over an Internet Protocol network is less rather than transferring analogue signals over a conventional telephone line.
Because of this, VOIP users can now avail of unlimited local and international calls at a cost of a fraction of the rates that the ordinary telephone company would charge. Because of developments in sound transfer and reproduction, VOIP providers improve the sound quality of the calls.
Basic Structure of VOIP Telephony
There are three elements of VOIP Telephony systems, which are the following:
* End devices. These include the hard wares that we are actually using and handling, such as conventional telephones and audio-equipped personal computers.
* Gateways. This is used to transform data received from the traditional telephone. It translates the data in a form that the Internet will accept it to process into digital information.
* Gatekeepers. It provides central management of calls and its related functions such as call admission control, bandwidth management, authentication of account, and others.
Minuses of VOIP Telephony
Though all the advantages of VOIP telephony are evident for those who used it, they also find some disadvantages of it. Some of them are enumerated below:
* VOIP is dependent to the Internet connection. So when the connection is down, your phone is inoperable as well. There are times that we will just lose the connection, and some information is in the process of sending, then it will just be lost.
* Once you have availed of the VOIP service, and you found out later on that you have slow IP or Internet Protocol connection; then you have a serious problem. VOIP experts stressed that slow internet connection will hamper any transmission of information, causing different problems like echoes, delay response time.
Moreover, connecting to other websites in the Internet and downloading information from there will be difficult and will further affect the VOIP performance.
The Future for VOIP Telephony
Regular phone service versus VOIP telephony; some say it is a very good fight. With the advantages and disadvantages associated with them, people have now lots of option. It will now become a part of the tight competition in the telecommunication industry.
Some say that the days of the traditional telephone service are now over, some say still it is a reliable companion for keeping in touch with other people. This produces a quite positive outlook for the consumers.
This will increase employment, the economy for the fact that different phone service provider will be handing advertisements to media outlets, and of course the improvement of service and the further innovation that they will study to have their product be the best among the best.
Other than that, the developments of the VOIP telephony are now subject to government regulations. As a growing industry, authorities believe that they can generate revenue in favour of the government, so they are trying to impose rules to regulate such industry.
In addition, it can be helpful in surveillance and intelligence operation against most wanted criminals and terrorists. It can also be subject for wiretapping issues. Whatever the case maybe, many still believe that VOIP telephony will hold a bright standing in the future.
