Long gone are the days when we had to wait minutes for a call to go through, and now comes the time for the revolution in phone service; the VoIP Phone Service, also known as Voice over Internet Protocol Phone Services. This 21st century technology is a turning point in phone service since Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone 128 years ago. This VoIP phone service enables you to send and receive phone calls over the internet instead of over a regular phone line.

VoIP phone service providers are offering cost saving service plans such as unlimited long distance call services, easy implementations, voicemail services, and much more.

Functionality
VoIP phone technology works by transforming analog voice calls into data packets, sending the packets over broadband computer networks, and translating it back to voice at the other end of the line or call.

This phone service also enables you to use the Net to call any regular phone, anywhere and anytime. The number of service providers is growing quickly throughout the country, and even telecommunication companies are joining into the list as well. Large companies such as AT&T, Verizon, and Qwest are now offering VoIP phone services as a replacement for home telephone services.

Beginnings
This new type of phone service started as a free service which enabled computer-to-computer calls. Many web companies, such as Yahoo, offered this service for free through their instant messaging services. Now this service has developed into a good and advance technology which is stable and has become the mainstream solution for both commercial and home usages.

Now
This service is subscription-based and is also known as broadband phone and Internet phone services. Instead of calling through the regular phone line, this new service allows you to make phone calls through your broadband internet connection. A great feature of this service is that the person you are calling need not necessarily have VoIP phone service.

This service must have at least a high speed internet connection integrated, such as DSL or cable, the main reason being that the service is based on broadband internet communication. In order for VoIP to work properly, there is need of speed of up to 90Kbps depending on the voice compression algorithm determined by the service provider.

Many service providers offer this VoIP phone service in various forms – such as different and specifically tailored packages for all residential users, commercial users, small businesses, SOHO users, and large companies.
Mostly, this service comes with infrastructure like hardware devices, soft phones, inbound and outbound termination and others.
